A major youth voter mobilization group has endorsed presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden – and is prepared to put $45 million behind the effort to replace Donald Trump with the former vice president.
The endorsement by NextGen America, founded by former Democratic presidential contender and climate change activist Tom Steyer, is not unexpected, given the animus young voters as well as climate change activists have towards the sitting president. But the full-throated financial commitment is important for Biden, who struggled to gain support from younger voters during the primaries.
“NextGen America is endorsing Biden because of the clear contrast between the former vice president and Donald Trump on climate, gun safety, education, the economy, and more,” the group said in a statement. “While another four years of Trump would be catastrophic for human rights and the survival of the planet, Biden has a platform that will move the country forward and can be pushed further by young people. NextGen America has created a voter guide for young people to compare Trump and Biden issue by issue.”
